What Happens If Your Car Fails a Pink Slip in NSW?

If your car fails a Pink Slip in NSW, it does not mean the vehicle can never be registered. It means one or more defects were identified during the safety inspection and those issues need to be repaired before the vehicle can pass the inspection and the registration can be renewed.

What does failing a Pink Slip mean?

A Pink Slip, also known as an eSafety Check or safety inspection report, checks whether your vehicle meets the required safety standards for registration renewal in NSW.

If the vehicle does not meet the required standards during the inspection, it will fail the safety check. The identified defects need to be repaired before the vehicle can pass and the registration can be renewed.

What happens after your car fails a Pink Slip?

After a failed Pink Slip inspection, the first step is to identify the defects recorded during the inspection and arrange the necessary repairs.

Once those repairs have been completed, the vehicle needs to be reassessed. If it then passes the safety check, the inspection result can be submitted electronically to Transport for NSW and you can continue with your registration renewal.

The 14-day Pink Slip reinspection rule in NSW

NSW Government guidance gives you 14 days to complete the required repairs and return the vehicle to the same Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) station for reassessment.

If the repairs are completed within that 14-day period and the vehicle is reassessed at the same AIS station, no additional inspection fee applies.

This makes it worth arranging any required repairs promptly rather than leaving the vehicle until the reinspection period has expired.

Do you have to pay for another Pink Slip after failing?

Not necessarily. If the required repairs are completed within 14 days and you return to the same AIS station for reassessment, NSW Government guidance states that no extra inspection fee applies.

If the repairs are completed after the 14-day period has ended, another inspection fee is required.

Do the repairs have to be done by the inspection station?

You do not necessarily have to have the repairs completed by the same provider that performed the inspection. NSW Government guidance for safety checks allows required repairs to be carried out by a suitably qualified mechanic.

However, to qualify for the no-extra-inspection-fee reassessment within the 14-day period, the vehicle needs to return to the same AIS station that performed the original inspection.

What if you don't return within 14 days?

If the 14-day period expires before the vehicle is repaired and reassessed, you can still have the vehicle inspected again, but another inspection fee will apply.

If your registration is also approaching its expiry date, it is a good idea to organise the repairs and reassessment as soon as practical so you can complete the registration renewal process.

Common reasons a car may fail a Pink Slip

A vehicle can fail a safety inspection when an inspected component does not meet the required safety standard. The exact reason will depend on the condition of the individual vehicle.

Problems discovered during vehicle safety inspections can involve safety-related components such as tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension and other inspected items.

What happens once your car passes the reinspection?

Once the required repairs have been completed and the vehicle passes its safety check, the inspection details are sent electronically to Transport for NSW.

You can then proceed with renewing the vehicle's registration, provided the other registration requirements have also been satisfied.
