What is a Pink Slip in NSW?
A Pink Slip, officially called a safety inspection report or eSafety Check, verifies that a vehicle meets the required safety standards for registration renewal in NSW.
Most light vehicles more than five years old require a yearly safety inspection when indicated on the registration renewal notice. Pink Slip inspections must be completed by an authorised inspection station.
Once a vehicle passes, the inspection result is generally sent electronically to Transport for NSW.
How long is a Pink Slip valid?
For most light vehicles in NSW, a Pink Slip safety inspection report is valid for six months. The vehicle registration must be renewed within that period for the inspection report to remain valid.
What is a Blue Slip in NSW?
A Blue Slip is commonly used to describe an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) inspection.
Unlike a standard Pink Slip safety check, a Blue Slip verifies that an unregistered vehicle meets safety requirements as well as design and identity standards before it can be registered in NSW.
Pink Slip vs Blue Slip at a glance
When might you need a Blue Slip?
A Blue Slip may be required in several situations involving an unregistered vehicle or changes to its registration details.
- The vehicle's NSW registration expired more than three months ago.
- The vehicle has been brought into NSW from another Australian state or territory, or from overseas.
- The vehicle has no number plates.
- A written-off vehicle has been approved for re-registration.
- Significant vehicle details have changed, such as an engine replacement.
- Certain defect notices need to be cleared.
How long is a Blue Slip valid?
An AUVIS inspection report, commonly known as a Blue Slip, is generally valid for 42 days from the date of inspection.
Pink Slip vs Blue Slip: the simple difference
The easiest way to remember the difference is that a Pink Slip is generally associated with renewing the registration of an eligible currently registered vehicle, while a Blue Slip is generally associated with registering an unregistered vehicle or dealing with certain registration and identity changes.
Your registration circumstances determine which inspection you need. If you are unsure, check your NSW registration renewal notice or confirm the requirements with Service NSW before arranging an inspection.
What happens if your vehicle fails a Pink Slip?
If your vehicle fails its safety inspection, the identified defects need to be repaired before the registration can be renewed.
NSW Government guidance states that if the repairs are completed within 14 days and the vehicle is returned to the same authorised inspection station for reassessment, an additional inspection fee does not apply. After that period, another inspection fee is generally required.
